A Mississippi father is the sole survivor of a house fire that killed six children and their mother early Saturday, according to a new report.

Neighbors called 911 around 12:30 a.m., and the home was fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived, according to WLBT-TV in Clinton, about 10 miles outside of Jackson.

Crews spent about 35 to 40 minutes putting out the flames. They were unable to rescue the seven victims, who ranged in age from 1 to 33 years old, according to the station.

The bewildered father was taken to the hospital to be treated for burns, smoke inhalation, cuts and bruises, according to WLBT.

“He was worried and concerned,” said Mark Jones, a spokesman for the city of Clinton, of the father. “He did not want to leave the scene . . . he was very concerned about his family.”

Photos of the home post-fire show a charred skeleton of the bungalow.

Neighbors remembered the family on Saturday as “really good folks.”

“The kids were really nice,” an unidentified neighbor told the station. “The whole neighborhood is just distraught about this whole thing because it’s just devastating.”

It’s unclear what caused the fire, though Jones said foul play is not suspected.
