Two people were killed and three more wounded in a shooting rampage that started at a Kentucky airport and ended at a church miles away, according to police.

Christine Combs, 34, and Beverly Gumm, 72, were killed Sunday after a gunman opened fire on churchgoers at the Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington, the Lexington Police Department said.

Both women were members of the church, while two male congregants were also wounded – one critically, according to cops.

Three officers responded to the shooting, and exchanged fire with the suspect. The gunman, who has not yet been publicly identified, was confirmed dead after the smoke settled, police said.

“Days like today are extremely difficult,” said Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers, according to the New York Times, “Sometimes things happen, you just don’t have a reason why.”

The deadly spree started around 11:30 a.m. at the Blue Grass Airport, when a state trooper pulled over a car on Terminal Drive after a license plate reader gave an alert on the vehicle.

The suspect shot the trooper during that encounter – leaving them in critical condition – and fled his car before stealing another and taking off.

He then drove about 15 miles to the Richmond Road Church, which police said he had a connection to, and “fired his weapon at individuals on church property.”

Responding officers killed the suspect, cops confirmed.

The state trooper injured at the airport was rushed to the hospital and has since stabilized.

Exactly what sparked the rampage remains unclear.

And what connection the shooter had to Richmond Road Church is also unclear, but Fayatte County coroner Gary Ginn called the community a close group.

“The majority of the individuals that attend the church there are related biologically, some way or another,” he said, according to the Times.

“If not, they’ve been friends for many, many years.”
