The two slain victims of Tuesday’s mass shooting at a Virginia high school graduation ceremony have been identified as an 18-year-old senior and his father, who was killed just minutes after watching his son graduate.

A family member named the father and son as 36-year-old Renzo Smith and Shawn Jackson.

Gunfire erupted around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday outside Altria Theater in downtown Richmond, Virginia, as a crowd of graduates and their families were filing out of the venue.

Police said seven people were struck by bullets, leaving two dead and five wounded.

A 31-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries. Four others, ages 14, 42, 55 and 58, suffered gunshot wounds but were expected to recover. 

At least 12 people were hurt in the chaos, or required treatment for anxiety.

Jackson’s 9-year-old sister was reportedly hit by a car in the mayhem triggered by the shooting, but she has since been released from the hospital, according to ABC News.

A 19-year-old suspect tried to flee on foot but was arrested and will be charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

Police believe the accused gunman, who was not immediately identified, knew at least one of the victims.

“This should have been a safe space. People should have felt safe at a graduation,” Richmond Acting Police Chief Rick Edwards said. “It’s just incredibly tragic that someone decided to bring a gun to this incident and rain terror on our community.”

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney echoed the acting chief’s sentiments, saying: “The question that comes to my mind right now is, is nothing sacred any longer?”

Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras said the shooting took place as the graduates were posing for pictures with family members and friends outside the theater.

Video from the scene shows throngs of people clapping and cheering. Moments later, some 20 or more gunshots ring out, sending hundreds of panicked bystanders — including graduates still wearing their caps and gowns — running for their lives.

“I don’t have any more words on this,” Kamras said. “I’m just tired of seeing people get shot, our kids get shot. And I beg of the entire community to stop, to just stop.”

Officers who were inside the theater for the commencement ceremony heard the gunshots outside and radioed their colleagues stationed outside, who discovered shooting victims in the large park across the street.

A witness told local station 8News they heard at least 30 gunshots and sources told the station that four firearms were recovered at the scene.

Police initially believed two suspects were detained, but Edwards said later that they determined one of them was not involved.

Richmond Public Schools announced that all high school graduations scheduled for this week have been canceled and all schools were closed Wednesday “out of an abundance of caution.”

US Rep. Jennifer McClellan (D-Md.), whose district includes Richmond, released a statement calling for gun reform.

“We cannot continue to live in fear. We must address the root causes of gun violence and pass common sense gun safety policies that protect our communities,” she said.

Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, a passionate Second Amendment advocate, said in remarks to news outlets near the scene that the problem lies not with guns but with criminals.

“Even if you took all the guns off the street, from the law-abiding citizens, the others who mean harm, who mean to kill and mayhem, they’re going to have the guns,” she said. “So we have to figure out what’s going on in our communities. We have to find the right problem so that we can come to the right solution.”
