The parents of the 2-year-old toddler who was killed by an alligator that snatched him on the shoreline of a luxury Disney World resort said that they’re “devastated” by the attack.

“Words cannot describe the shock and grief our family is experiencing over the loss of our son,” Matt and Melissa Graves of Elkhorn, Nebraska said of their son Lane in a statement Thursday.

“We are devastated and ask for privacy during this extremely difficult time. To all of the local authorities and staff who worked tirelessly these past 24 hours, we express our deepest gratitude,” the statement said, according to ABC News.

Little Lane was dragged by the gator Tuesday night while wading in the man-made Seven Seas Lagoon off of Grand Floridian Resort & Spa in Orlando as his parents stood nearby.

His dad desperately tried to pry him loose from the animal but was unable to and suffered minor injuries on his hands while trying to save his son from the grip of the gator’s jaw.

The boy’s family, including his four-year-old sister, were on their third day of vacation when the fatal attack occurred.

A dive team found Lane’s body not far from where he was grabbed by the gator Wednesday afternoon after an exhaustive search of the 172-acre lagoon that included sonar technology.

The gator attack happened in an area where “No Swimming” signs were posted, but there were no signs of gators in the area even though officials admitted that the dangerous reptiles are “routinely” removed from Disney grounds.

All of Disney beaches at the resort remained closed Thursday and Disney is reviewing all of its “processes and protocols,” Disney spokeswoman Jacquee Wahler in a statement. “This includes the number, placement and wording of our signage and warnings.”
