ROME — A middle-aged unemployed bricklayer opened fire yesterday in the square outside the Italian premier’s office, seriously wounding two policemen, authorities said.

The alleged gunman from Calabria told investigators he wanted to shoot politicians. But finding none, he shot at the police.

A bullet hit one officer in the spinal column, doctors said. It wasn’t yet known whether the officer would have any paralysis.
