A 6-year-old boy was killed and his 9-year-old sister is clinging to life after a gunman opened fire on their family’s car in broad daylight over the weekend, according to new reports.
The two children were inside the car with their mother and a 7-year-old sibling in the city’s Kingsway East neighborhood around 1:45 p.m. Saturday when the shooter — who was not known to the family — opened fire, KSDK reported.
A man rushed the children and their mother to a local hospital where the boy, who police have identified as David Birchfield III, was pronounced dead, according to the report. The 9-year-old girl is listed in critical condition and the 7-year-old was unharmed.
Their mother was hit with shattered glass, KMOV reported.
“We do not believe the children or their mom were the intended victims,” St. Louis Police Lt. Col. Ronnie Robinson told the station.
In a statement, St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson expressed her horror over the shooting.
“It’s maddening and hideous that anyone would open fire on a car with children inside. My heart simply breaks for these kids,” she said in a statement issued to the station. “I don’t know what I can possibly say to change this horrific outcome. It reinforces our need as a city to come together to continue addressing public safety, which remains my number one priority.”
“I’m thankful to the hardworking law enforcement officers who are committed to finding the person responsible and bringing them to justice, and I extend my gratitude to the community members who share our calls for peace,” she added. “It’s time to put the guns down.”
