The six people missing after the Frances Scott Key Bridge collapse are construction workers from the same crew who were patching potholes on the major roadway, officials said.
Eight members of the crew were on the bridge enjoying their meal break at the time of the collision, which instantly caused the structure to topple into the water below, Jesus Campos, one of the crew members who was not working overnight, told the Washington Post.
“I’m very sad right now,” he said in Spanish.

At least three or four of the crew members had recently welcomed newborns, according to Earl Schneider, a structural foreman for Cockeysville, Md.-based Brawner Builders.
Two workers have been rescued from the frigid 47-degree water, with one in the hospital in serious condition.
“I know everybody on that crew personally,” he told NBC News. “They’re all great people.”
Schneider said he was last assigned to work on the bridge about two weeks ago, but was awoken at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday to frantic phone calls from a friend from a local hospital who was worried he may be one of the victims.

James Krutzfeldt, another foreman, said the men’s friends and co-workers are “all just waiting for a phone call.”
“It’s all up in the air,” he told NBC.
“We’re waiting on our boss and owner to break it down to everybody.”

At least seven vehicles were also presumed missing after falling from the 1.6-mile-long span, the Baltimore City Fire Department said.
