A middle school teacher in Montana was arrested after police found meth and drug paraphernalia in his home, according to reports.

Shawn Fritzler, who taught social studies to sixth-graders at Ben Steele Middle School in Billings, was taken into custody after a Drug Enforcement Agency task force raided his residence on Jan. 16 and found several plastic baggies with white substances that tested positive for meth, the Billings Gazette reports.

Agents also found glass pipes, syringes and a digital scale in communal rooms in a home the 43-year-old educator shared with two other men, including former teacher Mark Kramlich, who previously taught at Medicine Crow Middle School before he was fired in 2017, the newspaper reports.

Fritzler, who has since been placed on administrative leave, had been teaching in classrooms prior to his arrest, school district officials said.

Fritzler is also accused of having a notebook with “writing regarding drug sales,” but he was not charged with distribution. He’s facing counts of felony drug possession and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the newspaper.

Kramlich and a third man living at the home, Lane Arthur Meiers, are also facing the same charges.

Billings Public School Superintendent Greg Upham said he was “shocked” to learn of the allegations facing Fritzler.

“We can’t get into people’s personal lives,” Upham told KULR. “There’s civil rights available that we have to be aware of and rightfully so, but it doesn’t mean we don’t learn from these things and work to support all entities in making sure we maintain a safe environment for all students.”
