A Pennsylvania man has been arrested after his elderly mother was found caked with her own dried feces, crawling with maggots and “fused” to a soiled sheet.

Daniel Klein, 51, from Upper Chichester Township, was charged with abusing a dependent person and reckless endangerment of his otherwise unidentified mom, who is in critical condition in a local hospital.

“This is one of the worst cases I’ve seen in my four years as district attorney here,” Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer told WPVI. “And for this person, the defendant Klein, to do this to his own mother, it’s just… I can’t even imagine.”

The alleged abuse came to light on Sunday afternoon, when police officers arrived at Klein’s home to perform a wellness check, according to a press release from the Upper Chichester Township Police Department.

A neighbor raised the alarm after claiming he had not seen neither Klein nor his mother in months.

The concerned caller noted that packages were stacked up at Klein’s front door and there was no answer when they knocked on the front and back doors.

Officers rang the doorbell and knocked on the front door many times but got no answer, so they went to the rear sliding door and could glimpse a pile of trash on the floor and “numerous flies,” according to the police.

Fearing that someone inside was either dead or having a medical emergency, the cops forced their way into the home, where they “detected a foul odor.”

Once inside the house, the officers made contact with Klein and asked him to escort them to his mother to check on her.

While walking through the house toward the rear master bedroom, where Klein claimed his mom was “sleeping,” cops saw that the home was littered with trash and swarming with flies.

Klein’s mother was found lying in bed under a soiled blanket. She was described as “unconscious” but breathing.

Paramedics who were called to the house removed the blanket from the woman and found “her lower half to be covered in dried feces and maggots,” police said. Her feet displayed what officials called “ram’s horn toenails.” 

“Crozer EMS were able to remove Klein’s mother from the bed revealing her to be fused to the bed sheets,” according to the release.

The victim was taken to Crozer Chester Medical Center in critical condition. Officials have not released the woman’s name or age.  

Klein allegedly told investigators that he was his mother’s sole caretaker and said she had not been out of bed for three to four weeks, but police suspect the woman may have been confined to her filthy bed for months, reported 6abc.

Klein remained jailed at the George Hill Correctional Facility after being unable to post 10% of his $50,000 bail. He is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on April 25.
