An elderly South Carolina man apparently drowned to death in a freak lawnmower accident on Monday, police said.
Daniel Lee Shaw, 88, was cutting the lawn in his yard in Gaffney using a sit-down zero-turn mower, when the machine flipped and tumbled down a hill into a creek, The Herald in Rock Hillreported.
The lawnmower landed on Shaw, seemingly trapping him under the water, Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said in a news release.
Shaw was found at around 8:50 p.m. when he didn’t return home – his body fully submerged, The Herald said.
It wasn’t clear how long he had been dead, but his family last saw him alive around 5 p.m., the coroner said in his statement.
An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.
