SpaceX’s massive Starship rocket launched for its latest test flight at 5 p.m. ET, where the company didn’t catch its Super Heavy booster after takeoff.

Today’s mission marks SpaceX’s fastest turnaround yet, with new upgrades to the booster’s propulsion systems aiming for a smoother and faster catch using the launchpad’s “Mechazilla” claws.

President-elect Donald Trump attended the event with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk at the company’s Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas.

What's next for SpaceX's Starship after latest test flight?

By Ronny Reyes

SpaceX has concluded the sixth test flight of its Starship rocket, with mixed results.

The test fulfilled three of the four main objectives Elon Musk sought, including a successful reignition of the Raptor engines in space, a daylight splash down in the Indian Ocean, and a harsher reentry and vertical landing.

The agency will begin preparations on a seventh test flight to improve upon the successes while also aiming for another Super Heavy booster catch, which was scrapped on Tuesday.

Since the booster catch failed, it will likely take a few months for the next test as the company works to make Starship a reusable vessel for space travel.

Gigantic SpaceX's Starship succeeds in 'flip' landing in Indian Ocean

By Ronny Reyes

Starship succeeded in soaring across the world to the Indian Ocean, where it performed a successful "flip" landing that pushed the craft to its limit.

As it soared above the clouds at supersonic speeds, Starship's systems were able to take the stress and keep the craft steady until a last minute reignition of its rockets successfully flipped it vertically.

Starship opts for 'older generation' heat shield for 'aggressive' reentry

By Ronny Reyes

Starship is using "older generation" heat shields as it reenters the atmosphere.

SpaceX announcers said that 2,100 tiles were removed in an effort to push the ship to its limits as it approaches an "aggressive angle" on reentry to fully test the limits of Starship.

SpaceX reignites Starship engine in space

By Ronny Reyes

While SpaceX opted not to attempt a "Mechazilla" catch today, it found success in another of its goals when Starship successfully reignited one of its engines in Space.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk wanted to see a clean restart of the ship’s Raptor engines while in space, a necessary feat for Starship to be a reusable vessel for the company.

Tuesday's reignition is a first in the company's history.

Elon Musk's Super Heavy booster aborts 'Mechazilla' catch, splashes down after successful launch

By Ronny Reyes

SpaceX canceled the second attempt to catch its Super Heavy booster during Starship's sixth flight test.

While SpaceX hoped to catch lightning in a bottle again following last month's successful catch, the company opted for a water landing today after reviewing the flight data.

The booster rocket separated from Starship as planned and splashed down vertically in the Gulf of Mexico.

SpaceX previously said that if the proper criteria was not meant at the moment of separation, it would not risk a catch on Tuesday.

SpaceX's Starship will launch with its first physical payload — a banana

By Ronny Reyes

SpaceX's Starship is set to launch with its first physical payload, a single banana.

SpaceX's livestream hosts explained that the banana will be used to show the effects of zero gravity inside Starship.

Fueling begins on Starship rocket system

By Ronny Reyes

SpaceX is moving along with loading fuel into Starship's rocket system, including its Super Heavy booster.

Super Heavy alone can hold up to 8 million pounds of propellant, according to the company, with the main Starship craft capable of holding another 3 million pounds.

Starship's system uses liquid methane and super-chilled liquid oxygen as its main propellant.

Lone worker on Starship shows incredible scale of massive rocket: video

By Ronny Reyes

Elon Musk shared a clip of a SpaceX worker working around the base of the massive Starship rocket prior to liftoff on Tuesday.

The worker stood by the 33 Raptor engines of the 397-foot tall rocket, which are capable of producing 16 million pounds of thrust.

If you look closely, you can see a human walking around the base of the rocket.

Each Raptor rocket engine produces twice as much thrust as all 4 engines on a 747.

Elon Musk lists 6 objectives for today’s test launch

By Ronny Reyes

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk laid out the six key goals for today’s test launch of Starship and its Super Heavy booster.

Musk wants to see the restart of the ship’s Raptor engines in space, which will be necessary for Starship to be a reusable vessel for SpaceX.

The test must also see a steeper angle for re-entry into the Earth's amosphere. The splashdown is scheduled for daytime in the Indian Ocean so as to allow for clearer observations.

Musk also wants to see a “faster/harder” Super Heavy booster catch by the Mechzilla claws after October's catch resulted in burn damage due to a short lull in the landing process.
