Members of the “Squad” of progressive lawmakers are celebrating the verdict against former police officer Derek Chauvin — but are maintaining their demands to defund the police as the only means of achieving justice for George Floyd’s death.
In tweets and statements Tuesday, after the former Minneapolis officer was convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, all six progressive pols praised the verdict but still insisted on “next steps.”
“That a family had to lose a son, brother and father; that a teenage girl had to film and post a murder, that millions across the country had to organize and march just for George Floyd to be seen and valued is not justice,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) wrote on Twitter about an hour after the verdict was read.
“And this verdict is not a substitute for policy change,” she continued.
Rep. Maxine Waters and other members of the Congressional Black Caucus wait for the verdict in the Chauvin trial. APAfter calling the conviction “a minuscule step on the path to justice” on Twitter, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) said “next steps” for the police reform movement included criminalizing “violence against protesters” and demilitarizing, disbanding and deconstructing “failed police departments.”
“Let this be a turning point, where we finally create a society that reflects the belief that all men and women are created equal. Let this be the moment where we implement a broad anti-racist agenda to root out the inequalities that continue to plague us,” she wrote in a later statement.
“Our communities need to be freed from the endless loop of trauma we are experiencing daily,” Rep. Ayanna Pressley wrote in reaction to the Chauvin verdict. ZUMAPRESS.comRep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) described the verdict as “relief” and said it offered “accountability for the murder of George Floyd.”
“But the fight for justice continues. Justice would be Gianna having her father today. Justice is investing in our communities, not police. Justice is no more Black lives lost to police violence,” the Michigan lawmaker tweeted.
“A system built on the foundation of justice and fairness must mean we never get to a point where Black and Brown communities wait with bated breath for a guilty verdict when there is absolutely no mistake that a life was prematurely taken,” she said in a statement.

“To be clear, the legal system in America remains deeply unjust. No one should die the way George Floyd did. A person’s murder should not have to garner global attention to result in accountability,” the Massachusetts pol elaborated in a statement.
“We can’t bring George Floyd back, but we can, and we must, legislate to deliver the critical resources our communities need to be freed from the endless loop of trauma we are experiencing daily,” she continued.
Rep. Cori Bush called the guilty verdict “a small step towards accountability.” Getty ImagesAll members of the squad have voiced their support for defunding the police, including new members Reps. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) and Jamaal Bowman (D-NY).
Bush tweeted out video of her and Pressley hugging after learning the verdict for the first time, which Pressley retweeted.
The freshman lawmaker also wrote, “Our hope is that this verdict will be a small step towards accountability. But that’s just about accountability, not justice. For us, justice would be George Floyd alive today.”
The “Squad” says abolishing the police is the only means of achieving justice for George Floyd’s death. APBowman wrote, “We’ve known Chauvin was guilty since the second we saw him murder George Floyd on film — but we also know of the racism inherent in our carceral [sic] and policing systems.
“This verdict doesn’t change that racism, or the work ahead needed to transform those systems to serve us.”
