Rising Democratic star Stacey Abrams — who rose to national prominence in the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election — said Monday that she is not ruling out a 2020 presidential bid.
Abrams made the announcement in a tweet, soon after she said in an interview at the SXSW festival that she would not run until 2028.
“20 years ago, I never thought I’d be ready to run for POTUS before 2028. But life comes at you fast – as I shared in Q&A w @Yamiche at @sxsw. Now 2020 is definitely on the table…” Abrams wrote.
Abrams, the former Georgia state House minority leader, narrowly lost the 2018 gubernatorial election in the state.
Had she won, Abrams would have been the first black woman elected to the post.
Earlier this year, she also delivered the Democratic rebuttal to President Trump’s State of the Union address on national television.
In an interview with the New York Times last week, Abrams said she’s mulling her options for a 2020 run.
“Now I’m not saying I would be the best candidate, but I’m not going to dismiss it out of hand the way others do,” she told the newspaper.
