House Minority Whip Steve Scalise will voluntarily self-quarantine after having “extended” contact with a fellow House Republican who contracted coronavirus.
Rep. Scalise’s (R-La.) decision came hours after Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FLa.) announced that he had tested positive for the rapidly-spreading virus.
“Since I had an extended meeting with [Diaz-Balart] late last week, out of an abundance of caution, I have decided it would be best to self-quarantine,” Scalise wrote in a Wednesday evening tweet.
So far, he’s not experienced any symptoms, and planned to work remotely while under self-quarantine, he added.
Scalise, the No. 2 House Republican, added that he would be remaining in contact with the White House, Congress, as well as local officials and health professionals in his home state.
On Wednesday night, Diaz-Balart released a statement saying that he had just been notified that he had tested positive for the virus. The Florida Republican said he had developed symptoms on Saturday evening.
“I want everyone to know that I am feeling much better,” Diaz-Balart said, “However, it’s important that everyone take this seriously and follow CDC guidelines in order to avoid getting sick & mitigate the spread of this virus. We must continue to work together to emerge stronger as a country during these trying times.”
That same night, Rep. Ben McAdams (D-Utah) released a statement saying that he, too, had contracted the virus after developing symptoms on Saturday and isolating himself from Sunday on.
McAdams was tested Tuesday and received his results earlier Wednesday, he said, adding that he plans to work from home through his self-quarantine.
“I urge Utahns to take this seriously and follow the health recommendations we’re getting from the CDC and other health experts so we can recover from this public health threat,” he wrote.
