WASHINGTON – Billionaire Tom Steyer has qualified for the fourth presidential debate, his campaign announced Sunday.
That debate will be held Oct. 15 and 16 in Ohio, with the Democratic National Committee not yet naming a host city.
Steyer was one of the 2020 Democrats who came close to qualifying for the third presidential debate, which will be held Thursday in Houston, but didn’t quite make the cut.
The DNC said candidates had to get 2 percent or more in four distinct polls and have 130,000 unique donors by Aug. 28 to be on the September stage.
Just 10 Democrats satisfied these requirements and will face off Thursday night.
In Steyer’s case, he hit the donor requirement on Aug. 13, but didn’t reach 2 percent in enough DNC-sanctioned polls.
Now he’s polling at 2 percent in a CBS News/YouGov survey out of Nevada.
Steyer shrugged off missing this week’s gathering.
“Look, I don’t think it matters,” he told Fox News last week. “I will keep talking to people and getting my message out.”
His campaign manager, however, was pumped that he would be included next time.
“We are thrilled that Tom will be able to share his vision – of how together we can fix our broken political system – with the American people,” Campaign Manager Heather Hargreaves said in a statement.
Steyer, who launched his campaign in July, missed the first two debates as well.
The requirements for candidates to participate in the October debate remain the same, and the hopefuls have until Oct. 1 to meet them.
Steyer’s inclusion means at least 11 candidates will participate in the next round, moving the debate back to the two-night format.
