A Muslim woman was berated by another customer at a supermarket in Texas, where she was told in an explicit, racist tirade to “get the f–k back” to her country, video shows.
Mai Mohamed said she was outside a Kroger grocery store on Westheimer Road in west Houston on Sunday when another unidentified customer began verbally attacking her without provocation. She then grabbed her phone in her car and began recording the interaction, she told the Houston Chronicle.
“I felt hate when she looked at me,” Mohamed told the newspaper. “I don’t know why.”
A 75-second video of the incident posted to Facebook by Fatima Loughlin-Saleh, Mohamed’s friend, shows the unidentified woman spewing a litany of verbal attacks after earlier telling Mohamed that she looked and dressed “funny,” Loughlin-Saleh said.
“F–k you, bitch, f–k you,” the woman tells Mohamed in the video. “Get the f–k back to your country, bitch! Get the f–k back to your country, bitch!”
Mohamed then tells the woman that she intends to share the footage on social media, prompting another outburst.
“Piece of shit, look at her,” the woman said to a Kroger employee standing outside. “This lowlife needs to go back to her f–king country.”
The Kroger employee then told Mohamed not to use her cellphone camera as a “weapon” before walking inside, video shows.
Sparkle Anderson, a corporate affairs manager for Kroger, later told the Houston Chronicle that the manager was trying to resolve the dispute, which disrupted other shoppers at the store. It remains unclear what exactly sparked the confrontation, Anderson told the newspaper.
Arsalan Safiullah, a civil rights attorney for the Houston chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said he’s now exploring Mohamed’s legal options. She has not filed a formal complaint with Kroger but did file a report with police after the incident, he said.
“Right now, we’re just trying to look at all the facts,” Safiullah told The Post, adding that the confrontation apparently started as Mohamed was filling up a water bottle outside the grocery store as the unidentified woman stared at her repeatedly.
Safiullah said that prompted Mohamed to ask why she was looking at her, setting off the expletive-laced rant, video shows.
John Cannon, a Houston police spokesman, confirmed that officers did not respond to the location on Sunday. Cannon did not have any additional information to share without a police incident report, he said.
Mohamed, a Muslim who was born in Egypt, could not be reached for comment early Tuesday. She immigrated to the Houston area in 2017 after obtaining a green card, she told the Chronicle.
