A 19-year-old student pilot helped make an emergency landing on a Utah freeway after the single-engine plane she was learning to fly lost power.
According to Utah Highway Patrol, the student was learning touch-and-go exercises from an instructor with Axiom Aviation Flight School when the aircraft suddenly sputtered in the air near I-15 South.
“They experienced some mechanical problems with the airplane,” said Sgt. John Ely of Utah Highway Patrol. “The flight instructor took control of the airplane and she’s the one that landed it on the interstate.”
Ely said the plane flew underneath the railroad structure and struck a Toyota Camry with four occupants.
“When the airplane hit the top of it, it blew out the windows in the car,” said Ely.
No injuries were reported.
In audio obtained by Fox 13, the pilot can be heard speaking to the control tower at Ogden-Hinckley Airport.
“… the freeway, going down,” the pilot said. “Now we’re on the freeway. … We’re going to need some help getting off the freeway.”
The plane crashed down just before 8 a.m.
“…we don’t know if we hit a car,” the pilot is heard telling control in the recording. “We don’t believe so, we just think we hit hard. But we’re going to need some help.”
Right lanes were closed immediately after the accident and the plane was taken back to the Ogden-Hinckley Airport in good condition.
Ely said the student pilot didn’t appear to be at fault.
“Basically, it’s the only place she could have landed at the time, so she made a good decision,” he said.
