School officials in Maryland are condemning a student’s “outrageous” Snapchat message, which used racial slurs to lash out over a basketball game loss.
Broadneck High School said the racist Snapchat photo circulated online after the basketball team lost the game Tuesday by a single point, news station WBFF reported.
The image, which shows a white student, attacks the rival team from Annapolis High School saying, “You only win cause you’re a bunch of f–king n—-rs.”
Principal Jim Todd sent a letter to parents Wednesday, which said the message “has no place here.”
“In the wake of that loss, one of our students posted a snapshot with a hate-filled caption that was racist in nature,” Todd said. “It is my belief at this time that the snapshot was sent as a private message to a single person, and that it was subsequently posted online. Regardless, the contents of this post were outrageous, deplorable and entirely unacceptable.”
The letter said the student accused of making the post will be disciplined.
“I want to be clear that I don’t believe the actions of this single student in any way represents the mindset of the majority of our student body,” Todd said. “I spoke to our students this morning, and reiterated to them our expectation that our building will be one where acceptance and inclusion is not just the expectation, but the norm.”
