Sully, this is Sully.
Sully the service dog met Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the pilot known for the “Miracle on the Hudson,” on NBC’s “Today” show on Thursday.
“Good boy. What a beautiful dog,” Sullenberger said as they shook hand to paw.
The two were introduced by Jenna Bush Hager, a “Today” host who is the granddaughter of President George H.W. Bush.
Sully, a yellow Labrador, was the service companion of the former president, who died last November at the age of 94.
Named after the heroic pilot, Sully was sent to Bush by America’s VetDogs, an organization that trains and places service dogs with disabled military veterans, after the death of former first lady Barbara Bush last April.
An image of Sully lying in front of the former president’s casket during the funeral with the words “Mission complete” made him a viral sensation.
He has 266,000 followers on Instagram.
Sullenberger, wearing socks with dog images and paw prints, noted Sully’s dedication.
“What a vigil he was holding,” he said. “It was quite a moving image. That was the iconic image for me of that whole service.”
Bush Hager mentioned that the meeting was supposed to take place last summer, but that her grandfather became ill and it had to be canceled.
America’s VetDogs/Rebecca EdenSully will report to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center’s Facility Dog Program next week for his next mission — working with wounded veterans.
Sullenberger landed US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River in January 2009 after the jet was struck by a flock of Canada geese after taking off from LaGuardia Airport.
