A heated dispute over the 2020 Super Bowl turned deadly when a California man was shot and killed — more than a day before the big game even kicked off.
Frank Rojas, 24, was at a barbecue in Fresno Saturday when a homeless man walked up to the revelers and started an argument over this year’s Super Bowl rivals — the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, KFSN-TV reported.
“There was a disturbance in the front yard of that house, at the corner house, regarding the Super Bowl,” Fresno Police Lt. Charlie Chamalbide told the station. “Preliminary info is that they were rooting for different teams.”
Police said the argument quickly got heated and the homeless man pulled a weapon from his backpack and fired at Rojas with “a makeshift gun,” Chamalbide said.
The suspect, who was not identified, tossed the weapon and fled the scene, but was arrested later.
Rojas underwent surgery at Community Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
