An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was shot in the head as he waited in line at a California Jack in the Box — and authorities are now probing the incident as a targeted attack.

The deputy, whose name has not been released, was wearing civilian clothing inside the  Alhambra fast food joint when he was shot early Monday evening. A suspect carrying a handgun while wearing a fedora, sunglasses and a burgundy shirt then fled in a white 2010-2014 Kia Sorento SUV with paper license plates, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

The suspect — believed to be a white or Hispanic male in his late 20s to early 30s — then drove to a nearby residential location and changed his clothes. He was last seen wearing a black shirt and dark pants, sheriff officials said.

The deputy, who was listed in critical condition at a hospital late Monday, was not wearing anything to indicate that he was a law enforcement officer, including a holster or a badge, Homicide Capt. Kent Wegener told reporters during a news conference late Monday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Investigators are now looking into whether the deputy — a 13-year veteran — was targeted in the shooting.  Wegener said anyone helping him elude police could face criminal charges, the Times reports.

“It’s time to turn him in,” Wegener told reporters. “You don’t want to be associated with this man, and the sheriff’s department is going to spare no resources to locate this suspect.”

A motive in the shooting remains unclear, KTLA reports.

A worker at the Jack in the Box who called 911 after the shooting said he initially thought the sound of the gunshot came from the kitchen.

“I was actually sitting down in the break room when all I heard was a loud bang,” employee Jesus Guzman told KCAL. “I go lean over and see … I think he got shot in the head because there was a hole in his head.”

Messages seeking comment from sheriff officials regarding the deputy’s condition early Tuesday were not immediately returned.
