A slew of suspects have been released in connection with the kidnapping of tycoon Mohammed Dewji — as politicians in Tanzania now push for an independent probe into the kidnapping of Africa’s youngest billionaire.
Police released 19 of 26 people who were taken in for questioning after Dewji was mysteriously abducted outside a luxury hotel last Thursday in Dar es Salaam, the Daily Nation in Kenya reported. The report said the suspects were released on bail, though charges were not delineated.
Suspects included Haji Manara, the spokesperson for Simba Sports Club, a soccer team that counts Dewji as one of its major investors, said Special Zone Police Commander Lazara Mambosasa.
Meanwhile, politicians are calling for an independent investigation into Dewji’s disappearance.
“If you look carefully at the statements made by the government and the police in particular, you’ll see an utter lack of seriousness on [the government’s] response on the issue at hand,” ,” said Godbless Lema, a member of parliament in Tanzania.
Police have not revealed a motive in Dewji’s kidnapping.
The 43-year-old textile tycoon is the East African country’s only billionaire, with a net worth of $1.5 billion.
