Paris cops evacuated the area around the Louvre on Sunday after finding a suspicious bag there — just hours before victorious presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron is set to celebrate his election night there.
Authorities cleared the courtyard outside the famed art museum as a precaution after finding the bag — booting out hundreds of journalists preparing to cover the event — but didn’t close the gallery itself, the AP reports.
The museum is already under heavy guard after a machete-wielding extremist attacked a soldier there earlier this year.
Macron won today’s election against National Front leader Marine Le Pen. Pollsters had expected that many left-leaning voters wouldn’t bother casting a ballot in the face-off between the centrist and his far-right opponent, Reuters reports.
Turnout was poor, with only 28.23 percent of voters showing up by midday, the news agency reports — the lowest in more than a decade.
