A Swedish mom who was arrested on suspicion of holding her son captive for nearly three decades has been released after authorities didn’t uncover any proof that he was held against his will, prosecutors said.

The 70-year-old woman detained earlier this week after a relative found the man in his 40s living in squalid conditions in the apartment in Haninge, BBC reported.

He had almost no teeth, was covered in sores, and was barely able to speak or walk, according to Swedish outlets.

But prosecuctors said there’s no evidence that his mother was holding him captive.

“We haven’t found any indications that he has been locked up, tied up or physically prevented from leaving the scene. There are no indications that there have been locked spaces,” Stockholm prosecutor Emma Olsson told Agence France-Presse.

“The man himself has said that it was up to him if he wanted to leave the apartment.”

It is believed that the man had been there for 28 years since he was pulled out of school, outlets reported.

Olsson said social services were now investigating the case, including reports that he had been removed from school when he was 12 years old.

“One can question her suitability as a mother, but this is now up to social services to look into,” Olsson said.
