A teacher at a Florida private school is accused of having sex with a student at his home after putting his baby down for a nap.

Aaron Zuniga, 28, was fired from his job at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville last week after school officials learned of an inappropriate relationship between him and a female high school student. He was arrested Friday on charges of unlawful sexual activity with a minor and offenses against a student by an authority figure, jail records show.

Zuniga admitted to the head of the school that he had a sexual encounter with the student earlier this month, but the teen would not admit to the tryst because she “did not want to ruin her school career,” according to a warrant obtained by WJAX. The age of the student was not released.

Zuniga later tried to downplay the ordeal, telling detectives he had an “emotional relationship” with the girl that included physical contact. He then demanded an attorney when investigators asked for additional details, the warrant states.

The student initially denied having sexual contact with Zuniga, but told police during a second interview that she and Zuniga “flirted in person” and exchanged Snapchat messages. She also told detectives that she was invited to Zuniga’s home — he lives “right across” from the school’s 150-acre campus on Hammond Boulevard, according to WJXT — on the pretense of babysitting his 10-month-old child, according to the warrant.

But Zuniga put the baby down for a nap in a room once the student arrived at his home. The student told police that she and Zuniga then had a “sexual encounter” on a tan couch in his living room, according to the warrant.

Some employees at the school said Zuniga — known to students as Mr. Z — was well-known and popular with students.

“He had such a good reputation from everywhere at this school,” employee James Baltz told WJAX. “Honestly, I hope this is going to be an awakening for the school.”

A message seeking comment from school officials was not immediately returned Thursday, but Zuniga’s termination was confirmed in a statement to WJAX.

“We are deeply saddened by this situation, because it is so far removed from the standards and values to which we hold our faculty and embrace as a school,” the statement read. “We are committed to offering care and support for the student and all families impacted.”

Zuniga remained held Friday at a Duval County jail on $200,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in court on April 15, jail records show. It’s unclear if he’s hired an attorney.
