A female Manhattan teacher was arrested Tuesday for shoving a third-grader to the ground and dragging him across the floor by his ankles, according to the city’s Special Commissioner of Investigation.
Rose Marie Sylvester, 58, of PS 375 Mosaic Preparatory Academy in East Harlem was hit with an Endangering the Welfare of a Child rap by cops after an SCI probe substantiated the student’s claims, officials said.
“Behavior such as that exhibited by Ms. Sylvester has no place in New York City Schools and will not be tolerated under any circumstance,” the SCI said in a statement.
SCI said Sylvester, who will be prosecuted by the Manhattan DA’s office, dragged the boy on the floor for about 15 feet in May, during the prior academic year.
“This alleged disturbing behavior has absolutely no place in our schools,” said city Department of Education spokesman Doug Cohen. “Ms. Sylvester has been reassigned since June and we have been actively pursuing her termination and removal from payroll.”
Sources said she began as a teacher in 1998 and was earning $113,685 a year.
It was not clear who Sylvester’s lawyer is.
