An Alabama teacher and former girls’ softball coach has been charged with sexually assaulting a student more than two decades ago, authorities said.

Henry Joel Snow, a 57-year-old sixth-grade science teacher and coach at Causey Middle School in Mobile, was indicted last month by a Tuscaloosa County jury on four counts of rape and sodomy, AL.com reported.

The victim reached out to authorities in February to report that she was sexually assaulted while attending the Tuscaloosa County School System during the late 1990s — when she was between the ages of 13 and 15, court documents show.

Capt. Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said investigators launched a 10-month probe, culminating with Snow being indicted and booked into jail on Dec. 24. He has since been released on $45,000 bond, AL.com reported.

Snow, who was 35 at the time, was teaching at Holt High School, where he also coached the girls’ softball team. Under state law, there’s no statute of limitations on sexual assaults, Kennedy said.

“It took a great deal of courage for this victim to come forward,” Kennedy told the outlet.

Mobile County school district officials have since placed Snow on administrative leave, WALA reported.

But state law mandates that Snow be paid while out of the classroom, as well as given the opportunity to request a hearing to challenge his termination, a spokeswoman told the outlet.

Snow has been certified as a teacher in Alabama since 1995 and passed a criminal background check in 2000.

Snow, who faces up to life in prison if convicted, is due to be arraigned next month, WALA reported Monday.
