BEIJING — Chinese education officials say a grade school teacher has been admonished for letting a pupil hold a parasol for her after photos of the incident drew overwhelming criticism on social media.
The Baoshan district education bureau in Shanghai said in a statement Tuesday that it is reminding teachers that they should discipline themselves and care for their students.
Members of the Chinese public have long derided government officials for having underlings hold umbrellas to shield them from the elements because it is seen as an act of arrogance.
The photos of the small boy stretching up his arm to hold a parasol over the teacher’s head on a sunny day triggered similar criticism of the teacher’s behavior.
