Texas Sen. Ted Cruz admitted Monday that authorities wish they had evacuated Camp Mystic sooner  as flooding walloped the region, creating “every parent’s nightmare’’ — as the state’s total death toll hit 95.

“Everyone would agree, in hindsight, if we could go back and do it again, we would evacuate. Particularly those in the most vulnerable areas – the young children in the cabins closest to the water, we would remove them and get them to higher ground if we could go back and do it again.” the Republican pol said at a press briefing in Kerr County, the hardest-hit area of Texas Hill Country and home to the famed camp for young girls.

But Cruz said he didn’t want “partisan finger-pointing and attacks” in the wake of the flooding.

“I think this is not a time for partisan finger-pointing and attacks. Now, after we come through search and rescue, after we come through the process of rebuilding, there will naturally be a period of retrospection where you look back and say, ‘OK, what exactly transpired, what was the timeline, and what could have been done differently to prevent this loss of life?’ ” Cruz said.

Officials at the press conference justified the decision not to evacuate the low-lying camps before the floodwaters ripped through the area before dawn July 4.

“Evacuation is a delicate balance, because if you evacuate too late, you then risk putting buses, or cars or vehicles or campers on roads into low water areas trying to get them out, which then can make it even more challenging,” Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice said.

“It’s very tough to make those calls, because what we also don’t want to do is cry wolf,” he said.

“These areas take a lot of time to get out to. So even when first responders were on the ground at 3:30 in the morning and we had reports, we had first responders that were getting swept away, actually responding to the first areas of rainfall, that’s how quick it happened,” Rice said.

Cruz, describing the disaster as “every parent’s nightmare,” called for Texans to come together in the wake of the tragedy.

“For many of us, these are friends and neighbors who have lost children,” he said.

The camp’s death toll alone is now at 27 — part of the overall tragic state figure of at least 95, authorities said Monday.

But 10 more girls and one camp counselor are still missing from Camp Mystic after flooding on the Guadalupe River, Cruz said.

Texas officials Monday also slammed trolls and scammers for targeting the families with loved ones who were caught in the flooding, with some sickos even claiming that they have some of the missing children and will return them for a fee.

“This is a worldwide discussion, and we’re dealing with scammers. Victims’ families are being reached out to, saying that, ‘They have their kids, pay me money.’ It’s heartbreaking. It’s absolutely heartbreaking,” Rice told the press conference.

Authorities also face fake calls to the five hotlines set up for the loved ones of the missing, saying the scammers make it hard to determine the exact number of people unaccounted for.

“We don’t have a solid number [of missing people] that we’re willing to talk about right now,” Rice said. “We do know that it is a lot. Because we also are getting a lot of fake calls.”

Cruz warned of “messed-up” trolls harassing the families of the missing girls from Camp Mystic.

He said one family he had spoken to were subjected to online abuse after sharing a public post about their missing daughter.

“Look, there are a lot of people that are messed up. And my call for everyone: There’s a time to have political fights, there’s a time to disagree. This is not that time,” Cruz said.

“This is a time just to reach out, support each other, go volunteer at the Salvation Army,” he added, saying that he had hugged his kids “with tears in my eyes” following the flooding news.

Cruz was also forced to respond to bizarre conspiracy theories, including some pushed by fellow Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, that government weather manipulation was responsible for last week’s Texas floods.

There is “zero evidence” to support such wild claims, Cruz said, in response to Greene’s proposed bill aiming to ban supposed atmospheric interventions.

“The Internet can be a strange place. People can come up with all sorts of crazy theories,” he said.
