An emotional Ohio teen tore into a former choir director as he was sentenced to four years in prison for sexually abusing her, saying she won’t be defined by his twisted actions.
The teen — who was 16 when prosecutors said she was victimized by Daniel Jones, a 48-year-old teacher and choir director at Logan Elm High School in Circleville – wept as she confronted the man she said she previously admired during his sentencing on Wednesday, WBNS reports.
“You made a fool of me,” the teen told Jones. “You took advantage of my weaknesses and used them. I have been bullied and trashed and judged and ridiculed in my hometown for something that was done to me by someone I trusted and thought cared about me.”
The teen said she refused to “put any more effort” into trying to understand what led Jones to single her out among other choir members at the school.
He was indicted in December, some 10 months after police in Circleville got a tip of a sex offense involving a teacher and a student, the Circleville Herald reports.
“I can’t change or go back or get back the last two years of my life, but I refused to keep reliving this over and over again,” the teen continued. “I know now that I’m not weak, and I am worthy of love and happiness. I will not let this define me.”
Jones, who previously pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual battery, must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life after he’s released from prison. The state’s Department of Education also revoked his teaching license, WBNS reports.
Jones, for his part, apologized to the teen, who prosecutors said was abused after “friendly banter” between the two took a physical turn.
“I’d like to apologize obviously to the victim for the hardship, the pain, the grief – all the things that I know that she has to be going through at the time, and has been going through and will continue to go through,” Jones said.
