Two young lovers in Oklahoma are in jail after an alleged plot to kill the girl’s family unraveled, according to police.
Zachary Sligar, 18, and his 15-year-old girlfriend, whose name has not been released, reportedly plotted to kill her family after her parents refused to give them permission to get married, news station KACB reported.
“They came up with a plan to do a three-way homicide by killing mom, dad and an older sister that lives on the property,” Lincoln County Sheriff Charlie Dougherty told KACB. “That was their plan, to kill those three and move along with life.”
Authorities said that Sligar brought a handgun late July 19 to the family’s home in Sparks.
The teen reportedly fired the gun at his girlfriend’s father, Sherman Crneckiy, and mother, Beverly Crneckiy, while they were asleep. The bullets narrowly missed the dad but struck the mom in the face and hand, according to officials.
However, the teen couple’s plan started to fall apart when the gun jammed, local station KFOR reported.
“[Sligar] also had a malfunction with the gun,” Dougherty told KFOR. “Once the plan started falling apart [his girlfriend] told Zach to leave and she would come up with a story.”
Emergency dispatchers received a call from Sherman Crneckiy around 12:01 a.m. to report that his wife was shot.
“We don’t know what happened,” he reportedly told the 911 dispatcher. “We think my wife may have gotten shot in the face. She’s bleeding horribly. We were just woken up by an explosion.”
The injured mom was brought to the hospital where she remains in critical condition, officials said.
Their daughter was taken into custody at the scene, and deputies later arrested Sligar at his home in nearby Shawnee.
Both face multiple charges including attempted murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
They are expected to appear in court next July 30.
