The teen son of an Aussie Scientologist stabbed one of the church’s employees to death Thursday following an incident with his mom, reports said.
The unidentified 16-year-old was being walked down the driveway of the controversial church’s $57 million Sydney headquarters by two staff members when he suddenly displayed a 10-inch “very sharp kitchen knife” and plunged it into one of their necks, news.com.au reported.
The victim, a 24-year-old believed to be from Taiwan, suffered “traumatic” stab wounds and was bleeding heavily when paramedics arrived, the outlet reported. He later died at an area hospital.
The other staff member, 30, who was helping to escort the teen, was treated for minor cuts and is in stable condition.
The events surrounding the boy’s removal from the property remain unclear, but police said the altercation was “solely in relation to a domestic incident that occurred yesterday.”
“He had a lawful reason to be here originally and they’ve asked him to leave for various reasons, which we still need to get to the bottom of and speak to staff here on premises,” said Detective Chief Inspector Simon Jones.
The Daily Telegraph reported the teen went to the church to see his mother. When his mom told staff at the church about an event that happened between them the day before, they decided it was best to get the teen off the property, a church source told the outlet.
The Church of Scientology is known to have a policy of “disconnection” that encourages members to distance themselves from friends or family who criticize the cult-like spiritual organization.
Leaders from the church declined to expound on the details that led to the stabbing, saying only “this very unfortunate matter is in the hands of the police” and “the victim was a beloved member of our church.”
