Israel’s Shin Bet security service on Tuesday said it has uncovered a plot by a terror cell to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.

Muhammad Jamal Rashdeh, 30, from the Shuafat refugee camp in East Jerusalem, also planned to target the US Consulate in Jerusalem and visiting Canadian officials, the Jerusalem Post reported.

The Canadians were in Jerusalem to train Palestinian Authority security forces in the West Bank, according to the Shin Bet.

Rashdeh, a former security prisoner who also is an Israeli citizen, received his orders from members of the Syrian-based terror group Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command, a Shin Bet spokesman told the Times of Israel.

Rashdeh was arrested April 24 and two other suspects were collared two weeks later, according to the security service, which didn’t identify the alleged accomplices.

“Working on orders from terrorist operatives abroad, Muhammad planned to carry out a number of significant terror attacks against a variety of targets,” the Shin Bet said.

The suspects also planned to bring in an additional terrorist operative from Jordan, the agency added.

Indictments were filed against the three men on May 27 but a court-ordered gag order was only lifted on Tuesday.

In a statement, Barkat praised the Shin Bet for foiling the terror plot.

“The Shin Bet is among the best in the world,” he said. “Throughout the investigation, I was updated and I knew that when the Shin Bet is in the picture and the Israel Police is on the ground, I can trust them and go to sleep with a calm mind and safely.”

He added: “During this period, I insisted on not changing anything in my daily routine because we cannot allow terrorism to dictate our schedule.”

There was no immediate comment from Netanyahu.
