Pic shows: The two Mexican grey wolf cubs that were born in captivity in cross border breeding programme during the press conference. With only 300 relatives across the entire world these extremely rare Mexican grey wolf cubs are a welcome sight for experts who have been trying for a decade to breed them in captivity. They were born after frozen sperm was taken from a male wolf called Perkins, from the Endangered Wolf Centre in Eureka, a city in the North American state of Missouri, and used to fertilise eggs from the female wolf called Ezita in Mexico's Tamatan Zoo. The embryos were then moved from the zoo in the north-eastern state of Tamaulipas and implanted into a third wolf at the Chapultepec Zoo in the capital Mexico City, under a team led by Doctor Juan Arturo Rivera Rebolledo. Announcing the success of the project, Mexican environment secretary Tanya Muller Garcia praised the scheme which she said had been implemented because at the age of 11 the female wolf Ezita had already had several failed litters. It became clear that she was unable to carry a litter to term, but it was also decided that her bloodline was much too important to lose, and so her eggs were harvested and used in the artificial insemination programme. Authorities are trying to reintroduce the wolf in its natural habitat, after it was hunted to extinction in the wild in Mexico three decades ago. Conservation projects in the United States, where some wolves survived in captivity, provided the genetic material for the effort, but the mother of the litter shown to the public on Wednesday could not conceive by natural means due to physical problems. The director of Mexico City's Chapultepec Zoo, Juan Antonio Rivera, said the two pups were born May 26. Rivera said it was 'the first litter of an endangered species obtained in our country by artificial insemination'. Until now, despite an ambitious breeding programme, experts have been remarkably unsuccessful in getting the rare Mexican g
