A rare, and undeniably adorable, red panda has been born in Tennessee. The species has a high infant mortality rate so caretakers took "a hands-off approach" - supervising the cub through hidden cameras in the animal's den at the Nashville Zoo. "The mother has done a great job of nursing and caring for the baby," said Zoo supervisor Karen Rice. Visitors will be able to see the fluffy cutie in the autumn, before she is paired with a mate for breeding. Endangered red pandas are part of the Species Survival Program from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Known for their appealing "teddy bear-like appearance" the furry mammals are native to the mountains of Central China, Nepal and northern Myanmar (Burma) where their habitat is in severe jeopardy. "Red panda mothers are very prone to stress and easily agitated, which could cause them to reject or unintentionally harm the cubs," added Karen Rice.
