Pic shows: This bizarre looking bird was rescued after it got stuck onto fresh tarmac. Construction workers in Poland rescued this bizarre looking bird after it wandered onto fresh tarmac looking for insects, and ended up getting stuck in the sticky black material. The road workers had been filling in potholes ready for winter in Przemysl, a city in south-eastern Poland, and had put down a layer of sticky black tarmac which they were planning to cover with stones. But when they returned to finish the job, they discovered the bird covered in tarmac and unable to free itself. Roadworker Hainrich Kozlowski, 29, said: "The bird had managed to get itself tarred and feathered. It had obviously wandered onto the tarmac looking for insects that were also stuck in the tarmac and got stuck itself. "As it tried to free itself the bird had managed to get its feathers completely covered as well. It was looking really sorry for itself, and it was also a pretty unusual looking bird so we pulled it free and took it to the vets." Once at the surgery Vet Radoslaw Fedaczynski, 38, identified the bizarre looking bird as a Hoopoe (Upupa epops), and said: "It was completely covered in tar, and we had to use a special solvent normally used to clean birds caught in oil slicks. Fortunately the treatment was a success, and after spending the night here we let it go the next day and it flew off." Although unusual in Poland the Hoopoe is common in many parts of the world, and in Israel is regarded as the national bird. It was worshipped by the ancient Egyptians, and has protected status in many areas because it eats insects often regarded as pests. (ends)
