Dramatic cellphone video shot by inmates captured the moment a hijacked chopper carried a notorious French gangster to freedom.

The footage taken by detainees at the Réau prison, and published by local media outlets including Le Parisien and FranceInfo, shows the getaway helicopter that whisked Redoine Faïd away with the help of three heavily armed accomplices.

Inmates can be heard cheering in the background as the chopper flies off in the clear blue sky.

“It’s spectacular,” one person can be heard saying.

A large manhunt was launched following Faïd’s daring escape and the career criminal was still at large Monday.

The chopper he escaped in and a black car he switched to after abandoning the aircraft were both found burned out in Gonesse, about 18 miles north of Paris.

While cellphones in French prisons are illegal, jails are overrun with smuggled devices, with more than 19,000 mobile accessories seized during the first half of 2017 from an inmate population of 70,000, according to the Telegraph UK.
