A North Carolina teacher deserves a hand–every day he welcomes each of his fifth-grade students with jazzy personalized handshakes.

Barry White Jr., who teaches English at Ashley Park school in Charlotte, says the elaborate fist bumps, hand slaps and hip shakes–called “good mornings”—help his more than 40 students get ready for the day.

“They know when they get to the front door we do our ‘good mornings,’ and then it’s time to go,” White told ABC News this week. “I’m always pumped up and then we start doing the moves and that brings them excitement and pumps them up for a high-energy class.”

White creates each signature handshake based on the student’s personality. He said it started with just one or two kids, then grew into a school phenomenon.

“I saw how much it meant to them, so I said, ‘Come on. Everyone come on.’ Then it was my full class, then it was kids from other classes. Now I have third graders wanting to do it too,” White said.

And when it comes to memorizing the unique moves?

“It’s muscle memory at this point,” he said. “I do it so much with them.”
