A dimwitted convict who’d just been sentenced in a theft case was busted for shoplifting hours later – after forgetting his court papers at the Minnesota store.
Employees at a Sears store in St. Paul saw Alphonso Terry Whitelaw sneak into a dressing room with an armful of clothing on Feb. 21 and exit with the allegedly stolen apparel stuffed under his own clothes, Pioneer Press reported.
When a worker tried to stop him, Whitelaw, 32, allegedly pulled out a knife.
“Don’t touch me,” he hissed, according to a criminal complaint.
Whitelaw took off – but police tracked him down after workers found his sentencing paperwork in the dressing room. The papers showed that same morning, he’d received a stayed sentence on misdemeanor theft charges out of Dakota County District Court.
He also left behind a love letter for his wife that promised he’d “put a ring on her finger,” the complaint said.
Whitelaw’s criminal record includes convictions for theft, making terroristic threats, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing police, domestic assault and check forgery.
In his latest shoplifting case, he was charged with aggravated robbery and assault.
