In the wake of the deadliest wildfire in California’s history, the town of Paradise was left looking as if it had been hit by a nuclear bomb.

Home after home in the Northern California town was burned to its foundation by an unprecedented blaze, which has taken at least 56 lives.

Dubbed the Camp Fire after Camp Creek Road, where the flames broke out on Nov. 8, it has forced some 50,000 people to flee and blackened 220 square miles.

In addition to the dead, some 130 people are still missing as rescue and recovery workers continue to sift through pile after pile of ashes left in the fire’s wake.

It’s not clear what started the blaze, although sparks from utility lines are being eyed.

Firefighters are also fighting two large wildfires in Southern California, where another three people have died.
