Had he been just inches closer, a tourist in Hawaii could have been toast.

An unidentified visitor was a risky three feet from a source of lava flow when photographer Eric Leifer snapped his photo in the town of Kalpana this month.

“This lava flow has been flowing out of the Kilauea Volcano for 34 years and counting. Lava boat tours are a somewhat common occurrence on the island, and are highly controversial because of the obvious safety concerns,” Leifer told Caters.

Leifer — who explained ocean entries of lava are extremely explosive and dangerous — does not recommend people get too close to the volcanic flow.

“The primary problem is the instability of the surrounding cliffs, since they collapse occasionally. If you are in the area when this happens, it won’t end very well for you,” Leifer told Caters.
