For the first time in 30 years, teachers in Los Angeles’ Unified School District — the nation’s second-largest school district — went on strike Monday in an attempt to garner a new contract from local officials.

Some 30,000 educators, represented by United Teachers of Los Angeles, walked out and began picketing at 7:30 a.m., according to CBS Los Angeles.

Nearly half a million students were affected.
