At least three teenagers were killed and 15 others hurt when two feuding groups at an illegal car meet at a New Mexico park opened fire, according to officials.
The gunfire erupted shortly after 10 p.m. in the parking lot of Young Park in Las Cruces, a city 45 miles north of El Paso, cops said.
“This is a huge crime scene with a lot of moving parts. It will take time to process it thoroughly and reopen everything,” Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story said at a press conference, describing the bloodshed as a “mass shooting.”
The dead are two 19-year-old men and a 16-year-old boy, police said. Their names are being withheld.
The injured range in age from 16 years to 36 years. Including the dead, seven were treated on scene and 11 were rushed to local hospitals.
At least three people were killed and 15 others hurt when shots were fired Friday at a car show in a New Mexico park, according to police and reports. APSeveral still hospitalized were “fighting for their lives,” said Story.
Police indicated multiple suspects are being sought, but have not yet been apprehended. Multiple people have been questioned.
The shooting erupted during an “unsanctioned” car meet for modified sports car drivers that drew around 200 people, an issue that has plagued the city for years, according to Story.
There was an altercation between the two groups with longstanding beef.
Both groups were carrying guns, and several of the injured were bystanders caught in the crossfire.
“We know that there is some type of ill will between these groups prior to last night. They had some issues before and it escalated last night,” said Story.
Around 50 shell casings have been collected from the scene so far, all from handguns.
The majority of the shooting took place in the park, but some casings were found in the surrounding streets.
“Honestly, nowadays a tragedy like this feels like a nightmare just waiting to come true at any possible moment, yet also always praying and hoping it never will,” Las Cruces City Councilor and Mayor Pro Tem Johana Bencomos said in a statement on Instagram.
“This was a heinous act of violence that will leave our city mourning.”
Car meets have been an ongoing issue for the city of Las Cruces, which typically are accompanied by bad behavior, according to Story.

“There were firearms throughout this entire event, some that were used in the shooting and just people have firearms willy-nilly throughout the hours leading up to it based on the video that has been provided so far to us,” Story said.
“In a perfect world, where I had 220 police officers like I’m supposed to, it probably would have been different last night. But I had no units available for most of the night prior to the shooting. I got what I got, right? If I don’t have any officers available, I can’t respond. So I wish it would have been different, but it wasn’t for lack of trying or because we didn’t want to respond.”
