A gunman killed two students at a New Mexico high school Thursday morning, authorities said.

The shooter, who opened fire at Aztec High School in Aztec, is dead, and no other injuries were reported, New Mexico police said.

Students were evacuated from the high school, which is about 180 miles northwest of Albuquerque, and transported to a park nearby.

Federal and state authorities are investigating.

“It’s horrible — it’s a great community and we love this place,” San Juan County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jayme Harcrow told People magazine.

“Things can happen anywhere, but it’s shocking when they happen in a place like here.”
