An Easter egg hunt that doesn’t take place indoors? That’s what President Trump is hoping for.
“I would love to have the country opened up and raring to go by Easter [April 12],” Trump said Tuesday afternoon, declaring that a recession caused by the coronavirus lockdowns in effect for much of the nation could be more harmful than the illness itself.
Meanwhile, negotiators say Democrats in Congress appear to be relenting on their opposition to a nearly $2-trillion stimulus package — and a deal could be close.
The optimism saw US stocks end the green today, recouping all of Monday’s losses in the biggest single-day gain since 1933.
Here’s what else we learned today:
Dream delayed:
- The 2020 Olympics have been officially postponed “to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021.”
New York crisis:
- The Empire State now has more than 25,000 cases and at least 200 deaths, as Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned the illness is spreading “like a bullet train” — and got a little too personal in his daily briefing.
- He also ripped into the federal government’s shipment of 400 ventilators, a sliver of the 30,000 it’s anticipated the state will need.
- But despite a statewide lockdown, a distressing video showed straphangers packed like sardines on a subway.
Young victims:
- The US saw its first known death of someone under 18 from the coronavirus — a child in California.
- A British mom posted a heartbreaking video of her 1-year-old son who was stricken by COVID-19.
- And a 26-year-old New Yorker with no underlying conditions described her frightening symptoms.
COVIDIOTS
- Stupidity is apparently contagious. Urban Dictionary has coined a new term for people who fail to practice proper preventative measures amid the pandemic.
- Kind of like this Real Madrid soccer star, who may face jail time for breaking quarantine to visit his model girlfriend.
- But do these doctors hoarding untested anti-coronavirus drugs count? Or are they just ‘Covid-espicable?’
Spring break revelers party together Tuesday, March 17, 2020, in Pompano Beach, Fla.AP/Julio CortezStaying power:
- The virus may stay on surfaces much longer than previously thought — with traces found in cabins on the stricken Diamond Princess cruise ship 17 days after they were abandoned. And red eyes could be a telltale symptom.
Some good news:
- For the second consecutive day, Italy recorded a smaller increase in cases. And shadows of normal life are returning back to China, as a section of the Great Wall reopened.
- Plus, Big Apple first responders are getting a hand… from an unlikely source.
