A 1-year-old boy was critically wounded in a police shooting in Houston late Wednesday.

Police said the shooting happened when a robbery suspect being chased by cops tried to carjack a vehicle from a mom pumping gas at a local station and displayed a gun just before midnight.

The officer opened fire, hitting the boy in the back seat, Executive Assistant Police Chief Troy Finner said at a briefing.

“Very sadly, I want to report an officer-involved shooting that happened tonight,” Finner said.

“Suspect is deceased,” the chief said. “Unfortunately we have a 1-year-old kid that was also struck, that’s in critical condition and we’re praying for that 1-year-old kid.”

“Pray for that 1-year-old and that mother,” Finner added. “Can you imagine pumping gas and having to go through this?”

Houston police said on Twitter Thursday that the boy’s condition had improved.

“Some good news,” the tweet said. “The one-year-old boy is now in stable condition.”

The incident began around 11:30 p.m., when cops tried to pull over a black Mercedes-Benz that had been linked to at least two robberies in the city.

The driver fled and crashed the car, then jumped out and tried to steal the mom’s car.

Police said the officer, who was not identified, did not realize the child was in the vehicle and fired when the suspect displayed a gun, the department said.

The cop was placed on administrative leave, and police have not identified the suspect.
