A high-level National Security Council staffer is leaving the White House, as new National Security Advisor John Bolton shuffles personnel with his own picks, according a published report on Monday.
Michael Barry, the senior NSC director for intelligence programs, is headed back to his old gig at the CIA, a pair of government officials told the Daily Beast.
While Barry exits on “very good terms,” his departure is going to be a “tough loss for the NSC,” a source said.
Barry had been a stabilizing force at the NSC joining in the fall and replacing Ezra Cohen-Watnick, who had been fired by then-NSA H.R. McMaster.
Barry’s departure is the latest of recent NSC exits of other top staffers, the Daily Beast reported.
The staffing exits include Richard Hooker, senior director for Russia; Jennifer Arangio, senior director for international organizations; Michael Bell, the top Middle East adviser; and Joel Rayburn, senior director for Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.
James Sindle, director for Lebanon, and Air Force Col. Kris Bauman, senior director for Israeli-Palestinian issues, have also departed since Bolton came on board.
The departures come as the NSC appears to be a growing influence in Trump’s orbit. The White House said Monday that the NSC – and not the State Department – would take the lead in improving US-Russian relations.
“We expect there will be ongoing working-level dialogue between the two security council staffs on national security issues,” NSC spokesperson Garrett Marquis told The Daily Beast.
