The US Embassy in Beijing issued a warning Thursday to Westerners in the Chinese capital of a possible terror threat against them on Christmas.
French, British, Australian and Irish officials followed with similar alerts for their citizens living or visiting Beijing, generally considered one of the world’s safest cities for foreigners.
The warnings made mention of the upscale Beijing neighborhood of Sanlitun but were otherwise nonspecific.
“US citizens are urged to exercise heightened vigilance. The US Embassy has issued the same guidance to US government personnel,” the embassy said.
Beijing police also issued a rare “yellow alert,” considered a mid-level security warning.
