A tourist in Florida was being kept alive on a ventilator after he was digging a sand tunnel on a beach with his family and it suddenly collapsed on top of him, authorities and family said.

Lee Goggin, 35, was on vacation from Dallas, Texas, with his wife and three kids when he became trapped under the sand Sunday in Crescent Beach, the Miami Herald reported.

Goggin’s wife, Courtney, was reportedly filming him dig a tunnel near the dunes before it collapsed.

“He essentially dug a tunnel by hand,” St. John’s County Fire Rescue spokesman Jeremy Robshaw told the newspaper. “He was digging alongside the dunes, which are about three to five feet high. Apparently, the sand collapsed on him and the individual was trapped.”

Family members attempted to help the man, but were unable to dig him out. While buried, Goggin went into cardiac arrest, according to authorities.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and rescued the unconscious man from under two to three feet of sand. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

A GoFundMe page created for Goggin’s medical expenses said that he “has a heartbeat but he is not breathing on his own.”

“The next 24 hours will be very critical for him and we need all the prayers we can get,” his sister, Rachel Goggin Burt, wrote Sunday on the page.
