LOS ANGELES — “Star Trek: Into Darkness” had a $70.6 million domestic launch over the weekend, bumping “Iron Man 3” down to second place.

But despite its top spot, the “Star Trek” sequel didn’t meet studio expectations, falling short of the original’s $75.2 million debut.

“The Great Gatsby” held up at No. 3, with $23.4 million, behind “Iron Man 3,” with $35.2 million.
